Verdi's Theater

Focuses on a neglected aspect of Verdi's operas: their effectiveness as theatre. This text argues that two main aesthetic conceptions underlie all of Verdi's works - that of the "melodrama", which dominates Verdi's early work, and the "musical drama", which is dominant in his later work.
