The Fremantle Diary

The Fremantle Diary is a fascinating primary document of the Civil War, the diary of English Col. James Fremantle, who kept this engaging account of his tour of the Confederacy in 1863. His itinerary included visits with a who's-who of the South: Lee, Davis, Stuart, Johnston, Longstreet, and many others. His tour culminated at the Battle of Gettysburg, which Fremantle witnessed at Lee's side. Historian Walter Lord provides an introduction and extensive notes for the modern reader.
