MAXCY GREGG was a lawyer, a classically educated scholar, a politician, and a volunteer soldier. But his primary interest was the natural world, especially birds. Gregg's "sporting journals" chronicles the investigations of a self-instructed genuine expert on birdlife and presents a realistic and unusual sample of antebellum Southern life.
