This book marks the 20th anniversary of the Department of Criminology of the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology (NICC). On the occasion of this anniversary, a series of research seminars were organised, during which NICC researchers, practitioners and international experts engaged in a dialogue on several key research themes. They discussed the future of the Department of Criminology and put the work of the NICC into perspective, both nationally and internationally. The results of these exchanges are bundled in this book. Christophe Mincke, PhD in Law and criminologist, is the head of the Department of Criminology at the NICC (in Brussels) and is a professor at the University of Saint-Louis (in Brussels). He studies the discourses that legitimize prison through mobility and openness. Dani Brutyn, Master in Criminological Sciences and Master in International Relations and Diplomacy, joined the Department of Criminology at the NICC as a research assistant in 2018. Dieter Burssens, Graduate in Social Work and PhD in Criminological Sciences, is a scientific researcher at the NICC (in Brussels), a member of the TPO (Prevention Development Team) and a member of the editorial board of Welwijs. Anne Lemonne, PhD in Criminological Sciences from the Université Libre de Bruxelles, works at the Criminology Department at the NICC since 2004. Her research interests focus on victimology and restorative justice. Eric Maes, PhD in Criminological Sciences, is senior researcher at the Department of Criminology at the NICC (in Brussels), and a member of the editorial board of the Flemish criminological journal Panopticon. Bertrand Renard, PhD in Criminology and lawyer, is senior researcher at the Department of Criminology at the NICC (in Brussels) and is a professor at the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain, Louvain-La-Neuve). His research interests focus on forensic expertise, the use of technology in criminal justice and the relationship between science and law. Luc Robert, PhD in Criminology, worked as a researcher at the NICC. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher at Ghent University and a visiting researcher at the NICC. His main research topics relate to penology, recidivism and criminal careers.
